| BADENE ESTATE, KVÄNUM

Claes
and Eva Maria Friberg, Malma farm Götene, are owner of Badene estate since
1999. Domänverket (The National Forest Enterprise of Sweden) owned the
farm up until 1993. Badene is situated on the very fertile Vara plain
approx 2 km south of Kvänum.
The farm is typical for the area – with extensive crop production with a
large percentage comprising cereal and oil plants. Up to now approx. 1 300
fattening pigs are raised annually. Animal production has existed on
Badene over a long period. Dairy cattle were on the farm until 1962.
The whole farm was subsoil drained during 1900-1924. Many of the drainage
lines and canals where piped during the 50’s och 60’s in order to improve
the farm layout. Through the farm flow several smaller watercourses that
flow into the river Lidan. Clay soils, typical for the area, contribute to
low leaching. In general the soils on Badene are special in that in many
years there occurs considerable denitrification of nitrogen, a biological
process resulting in the loss of nitrate nitrogen.
The farm is connected with the previously important program Reko, an
environmental and quality concept. A large area of the farm is used for
seed production this year.
The farm also includes a number of valuable natural habitats. Wooded
pasture was previously grazed using the farms own animals but are now
grazed using tenanted animals. Badene also includes small woods and
deciduous forests typical for the plains area.
Cropping is primarily used for commercial sale though part of the cereal
production is used for the farms animal production. Previously, large
amounts of straw were sold as bio fuel. A new piggery for sows is now
built on Badene. 110 pregnant sows will be brought in every four
weeks for farrowing. After weaning sows are returned to the breeding
centre for serving.
14 000 piglets will be produced annually.
Agricultural Technologist Patrik Velander manages the farm together with
four employees.
Soil type
is: moderate humus content–
heavy clay.
