HIDINGE farm, Fjugesta

The farm is managed by Gunnel and Håkan Wahlstedt together with family. Hidinge is situated near Fjugesta, South West of Örebro. The farm has 116 ha of arable land, and 25 ha forest. The farm provides yearly employment for approx 3,5 people.

Crop growing
The farm is well planned with 4 areas for cropping. The farm is divided into approx. 10 fields. All fields are underdrained, approx. 40 ha of the fields consist of humus rich soils and are diked, with drainage water pumped out. The remaining area is clay with a certain area consisting of sand moraine. The mineral soils are high in pH value (6,5-7,5) as they are situated in a lime rich area. Phosphor and potassium values are good.
Crops grown are cereals, oilseeds, peas, linseed and approx. 10-12 ha of potatoes annually. All the pig manure approx. 3800 kbm is spread using a band spreader in established crops. Machine technique is aimed at reducing the number of field passes / cultivations in order to reduce the risk for damaging soil compaction.
An important area is the management of organic material and nitrogen on humus rich soils. Long term harvested withdrawal of organic material enables large amounts of nitrogen to become available.

Fattening pigs
In four stables house there are 1800 specialized places for fattening pigs with wet feeding. The pigs are fed with cereals (own), bakery bread and waste milk, soybean, premix as well as powder soup from Ekströms. Annual production is approx. 5700 pigs. With the expansion of pig production in 2002 extra area for spreading manure was contracted.

The river Svartån flows through the farm which is a water supply for Örebro city. It is therefore important that plant nutrient input and chemical pesticide use be done in a way that does not entail damage to the environment. Hidinge has carried out a number of measures that enable it to show a farm management that pays close attention to production quality as well as taking full responsibility for a good production environment.

A straw fuel furnace (300kW) supplies the whole farm including the grain drier with heat.
