WIGGEBY FARM

Wiggeby farm is located 30 km from Stockholm City on Färingsö, one of many islands in lake Mälaren. Today the farm is owned by Håkan och Teri Eriksson. The family bought the farm from Robert Ljunglöv 1925, known by many as snuff manufacturer Ljunglöv. With the changeover of ownership in 1925 Wiggeby farm comprised 33 ha. Today (spring 00), after purchase and leasing of land, the farm comprises a total of approx. 440 ha.

Extensive permanent housing is located in near vicinity to the farm. This makes it important to emphasize planning and carrying through of different cultivation and operation activities e.g. with spreading of manure and use of chemical pesticides. A large proportion of the farms acreage borders natural land and the farm lies in an area with great cultural and environmental value.

The farm buildings are in very good condition One reason is that the main building was destroyed by fire in 1962. After rebuilding began an extensive renovation and extension program. An important aspect comprises the large proficiency shared by Håkan and his brother for planning and carrying out of building and contract work. A drying plant and machine shed where constructed by the end of the 60´s. A large workshop was constructed 1988. The first large piggery was built in 1971. A second piggery was built in 1992. Today there is a capacity for raising 3.900 pigs a year. During recent years measures have been taken to facilitate grain handling and feed preparation. At present capacity is being increased in the drying and silo plant.

All of the farms oil-fired boilers were replaced in the beginning of the 90´s with a large straw-fired boiler. A storage facility for straw was also constructed at the same time. The energy supply can be considered relatively sustainable.

Wiggeby is managed as a company. The focus of production is mainly crop husbandry, typical for the region, completed with fattening pigs. Cultivated crops are foremost grain, peas and oleiferous crops. One new interesting direction will be growing of clover and grass seed together with plant growth for ensilage and haysilage for horses. The aim will be have 25 % of the acreage as grass land. Contract work is also included as well as some forestry.
